Chandigarh, March 3
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday urged farmers’ leaders to avoid road and rail blockades, saying such actions cause inconvenience to the public and disrupt businesses. His appeal came after talks with farmers’ representatives failed to resolve the issues. “Blocking roads, stopping trains, or shutting down Punjab is not a solution to any issue,” Mann wrote on X. “These actions impact the work and businesses of other sections of society. Let us also think about this.”
While farmers’ leaders described the meeting at Punjab Bhawan as initially positive, they said tensions rose when the topic of a planned protest in Chandigarh came up. According to the farmers, Mann became visibly upset when they insisted that a decision on the protest would be made only after internal discussions among their leadership.
A government spokesperson said the talks did not yield results as the farmers appeared set on holding the protest regardless of the discussions.
