Srinagar, April 14
The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested eight people over vandalism during protests triggered by a sexual harassment complaint involving a girl student in Sopore. Officers said a lecturer, identified as Ghulam Hassan Mir, has been booked following allegations of sexual assault by a girl student. The case prompted demonstrations by students, which officials said were largely peaceful but saw instances of property damage.
The police said 25 more individuals have been identified in connection with the unrest, adding that action is being taken against those accused of disturbing public order. Meanwhile, the education department has suspended the lecturer and ordered an internal inquiry. An official has been appointed to lead the investigation, with a report expected within 15 days.
The officials said they are continuing efforts to address both the criminal case and the protest-related incidents.
