Chandigarh, October 9
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of universal fortified rice distribution under all government schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY), until December 2028. The initiative, funded entirely by the central government, aims to combat anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies through the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and welfare schemes like ICDS and PM POSHAN. Fortified rice, enriched with iron, folic acid, and Vitamin B12, is intended to improve nutritional security across India.
