The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday named Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, replacing Arvind Kejriwal, who is set to resign. Kejriwal will meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4:30 p.m. to formally submit his resignation. Kejriwal yesterday discussed with Manish Sisodia on potential leadership changes. Quoting party sources, North News reported yesterday that Atishi, who currently oversees five departments in the Delhi cabinet, was among the frontrunners for the Chief Minister position.
Atishi was unanimously chosen as the new Chief Minister after a meeting with all AAP MLAs, said Delhi Minister Gopal Rai while addressing press conference in New Delhi. She will serve in the role until the upcoming assembly elections, he added. The current Delhi Assembly’s term expires on February 11, 2025, with the last election held on February 8, 2020, where the AAP secured 62 of the 70 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 8.
