Chandigarh, January 30
Harpreet Kaur Babla, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, has been elected Mayor of Chandigarh, defeating Prem Lata of the opposition INDIA bloc. Babla clinched victory through cross-voting, as the INDIA bloc has 20 votes in the 35-member municipal corporation house, including 13 from AAP, six from Congress, and an ex-officio vote from Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari while BJP has 16 votes. Babla, a councillor from ward 10, received 19 votes, while Lata, representing ward 23, got 17 votes. The election was monitored by Jaishree Thakur, former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the Supreme Court-appointed observer.
