Chandigarh, August 14
Raising concerns about the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) statement regarding wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav criticised the central government on August 14.
On August 7, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics for being 100 grams overweight the permissable limit. This was just a few hours before she was meant to fight for gold in the 50 kg category.
Responding to the criticism of the Indian squad medical team being held responsible for Phogat’s disqualification, IOA president PT Usha had described the attack as “unacceptable and worthy of condemnation.” reported the news outlet Times of India.
“By making such statements, isn’t the Indian Olympic Association pointing a finger at the support staff along with the coach of the athlete?” wrote Akhilesh Yadav in Hindi on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on the exception to the sporting body’s statements on Phogat’s disqualification.
