Ludhiana, June 23
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured victory in the Ludhiana West Assembly by-election, with its candidate Sanjeev Arora defeated Congress nominee and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu. The bypoll, held on 19 June, was necessitated following the death of sitting AAP MLA Gurpreet Singh Gogi.
Arora, a Rajya Sabha MP, emerged victorious in a four-cornered contest that included Jiwan Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Parupkar Singh Ghumman of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Voter turnout, however, was a concern. Ludhiana West recorded the lowest participation among the five constituencies that went to bypolls last week, with only 51.33% of eligible voters casting their vote.
