Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended Seychelles’ 50th National Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour, becoming the first Indian prime minister to participate in the country’s Independence Day events. Prime Minister Modi is on a three-day visit to the island nation, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles. The celebrations featured a ceremonial parade in which contingents from the Assam Rifles, the Indian Navy and an Indian Navy marching band took part, highlighting the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries. Indian naval ships INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak were also docked at Port Victoria for the occasion.
In a symbolic gesture, Modi stood to acknowledge the Indian contingent as it marched during the parade.In a post on social media, the prime minister described Seychelles as a “trusted friend and partner”, saying bilateral ties continued to strengthen through shared values and closer people-to-people connections.Earlier in the day, Modi held talks with Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on expanding cooperation between the two nations. During a special ceremony, President Herminie conferred Seychelles’ highest civilian honour, the Guardian of the Blue Horizon, on Modi, recognising his leadership on environmental issues, support for developing nations and commitment to promoting the Blue Economy.
