Chandigarh, June 24
A 35-year-old man allegedly shot dead his aunt, her teenage son and a friend before dying by suicide in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district on Tuesday night. The incident took place in Mundi Kalar village near Batala, with police suspecting a land dispute as the motive behind the killings.
According to police, the accused, identified as Manjot Singh, arrived at his uncle Nishan Singh’s residence on Tuesday night, accompanied by his friend, Pargat Singh, a former serviceman and resident of Khan Pyara village.
Investigators said Manjot was carrying a pistol belonging to Pargat Singh when he allegedly opened fire on his aunt Hardeep Kaur, 45, and her 13-year-old son Haramrit Singh. Nishan Singh was not present at the house when the incident occurred.
Police said Pargat Singh objected to the attack and entered into an argument with Manjot. During the altercation, Manjot allegedly shot Pargat dead. His body was later recovered from an open area in the village.
After the incident, Manjot reportedly returned to his own residence and allegedly shot himself with the same weapon. His body was found in the kitchen of his house, police said.
The incident came to light when Nishan Singh returned home and discovered the bodies of his wife and son. He subsequently informed the police.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a dispute over land between Manjot Singh and Nishan Singh may have led to the violence. Police have not ruled out other angles and are continuing their probe.
Officials said all four bodies have been sent to Batala Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police also revealed that Manjot Singh’s parents had passed away and that his brother is currently residing abroad.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the suspected land dispute. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation and post-mortem reports.
