The Ministry of Health confirmed India’s first Mpox case on Monday evening, clarifying that there is currently no widespread risk to the public. The infection, initially suspected, has now been confirmed as travel-related, with laboratory tests identifying the virus as Mpox from the West African clade 2.
“This case is isolated, much like the previous 30 cases reported in India since July 2022. It is unrelated to the ongoing public health emergency declared by WHO, which involves Mpox clade 1,” the ministry clarified.
The infected patient, a young male who recently returned from a country experiencing ongoing Mpox transmission, has been placed in isolation at a designated tertiary care facility. He is clinically stable, showing no signs of systemic illness or underlying health conditions.
