Chandigarh, April 29
The Punjab Cabinet on Tuesday approved a one-day special session of the Assembly to be held on May 1 to mark Labour Day, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stating that the session will honour workers and address issues concerning the working class.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Announcing the move, Mann said the session will be dedicated to labourers and artisans for their contribution to the country’s social and economic development. He said representatives of labour unions will be invited to attend the proceedings as special guests. “This one-day session will be dedicated to the hardworking labourers and artisans who make a vital contribution to the country’s development,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister added that the House will discuss the impact of changes to the MGNREGA scheme on workers, along with wider national and international challenges affecting the working class. He said other legislative business, as decided by the Business Advisory Committee, will also be conducted during the session. The announcement comes days after seven Rajya Sabha MPs of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party resigned and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, adding a political backdrop to the development.
The government said the session will serve as a tribute to the working class while also providing a platform to deliberate on policies and challenges impacting labourers, with further legislative decisions expected during the proceedings.
