Opposition’s anti-women stand will be questioned in their constituencies: Rekha Gupta

New Delhi, April 18

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday criticized opposition parties after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, alleging that their stance reflected an anti-women stance that would be questioned by women in their respective constituencies.

In a post on X, Gupta said the opposition had decided not to allow women to reach the Lok Sabha. She further alleged that opposition parties were only concerned about women within their own families and not about women across the country.

She also accused the opposition of attempting to politicize the issue, stating that they do not want half of the population to gain representation in Parliament.

Gupta said the opposition’s stand would be questioned by women voters in their constituencies and added that the issue concerns broader women’s representation in legislative bodies.

Referring to demographic changes, she said that India’s population has increased significantly since 1971 and argued that parliamentary representation should reflect this change. She also said that in several countries, women’s representation in legislatures is close to or exceeds fifty percent, and suggested that India should move in a similar direction.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came in the backdrop of political debate over the failed passage of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha.
