New Delhi, July 3
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held comprehensive discussions with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, reaffirming the “warm and time-tested” relations between the two nations. During the talks, President Mahama condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, expressing unequivocal solidarity with India and its fight against terrorism.
Talks focused on enhancing cooperation in trade, defence, digital technology, and capacity building, with a shared ambition to elevate the partnership to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
The leaders outlined plans to double bilateral trade from $3 billion to $6 billion over the next five years. India also offered its support for Ghana’s aspiration to join BRICS, although officials said any membership would require consensus among existing member states. Secretary (Economic Relations) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Dammu Ravi, noted: “It’s up to Ghana to pursue its case with other BRICS members, but India is happy to support.”
Modi and Mahama also pledged deeper cooperation across agriculture, pharmaceuticals, mining, infrastructure, and digital connectivity, including the expansion of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Ghana. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to democratic values, Global South solidarity, and South-South cooperation. They also called for sustained efforts toward sustainable development and global peace.
