In a significant decision, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a status quo for a week on the Shambhu border near Ambala where the farmers have been protesting since February 13. The Supreme Court proposed a setting up a committee to look into farmers’ various demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops and asked Centre, Haryana and Punjab to suggest names. “Till such time both the states are directed to maintain status quo at the site to prevent the flaring up of the situation at the Shambhu border,” a three-judge Bench led by Justice Surya Kant said. While highlighting the “trust deficit” between the government and the protesting farmers, Justice Kant said the issues could be resolved through negotiations.
