Parliamentary panel to summon Meta over Zuckerberg’s India election remark

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology and BJP MP, Nishikant Dubey,  on Tuesday called for Meta to apologize over what he described as “wrong information” shared by CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “My committee will summon @Meta for this wrong information. Wrong information in any democratic country tarnishes the image of the country. That organization will have to apologize to the Indian Parliament and the people here for this mistake,” Dubey wrote in his post on social media.

Dubey’s comments followed Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s response to Zuckerberg’s statement about the 2024 Indian elections. Vaishnaw criticized Zuckerberg’s claim that most incumbent governments, including India’s, lost in post-COVID elections, calling it “factually incorrect.” He pointed to India’s 2024 election outcome, where the NDA, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secured a third-term victory. “From free food for 800 million to 2.2 billion free vaccines and aid to nations during COVID, PM Modi’s leadership has proven decisive,” Vaishnaw wrote on X, formerly Twitter. He added, “It’s disappointing to see misinformation from Mr. Zuckerberg himself. Let’s uphold facts and credibility.”
