India’s 2027 Census will be conducted entirely through digital platforms, with officials confirming that data will be collected through mobile applications and a dedicated online portal. Respondents will also have the option to self-enumerate using a web-based system, marking a significant shift from traditional paper-based enumeration.
The government has said the entire process will be overseen through a centralised digital portal designed to manage and monitor field operations. As in previous exercises, the Census will record details of every person at the location where they are found during the period of enumeration.
Migration data will continue to form a key part of the exercise, with information gathered on individuals’ place of birth, last residence, duration of stay at their current address and reasons for moving. The questionnaire for the 2027 round will be formally notified in the Official Gazette before fieldwork begins. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai outlined the plans in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, noting that digital tools were expected to make data collection faster, more accurate and easier to manage at scale.
