A total of 1.33 million Indian students were pursuing higher education in universities and tertiary institutions abroad as of January 2024, according to information presented by the Minister of State for External Affairs(MEA), Kirti Vardhan Singh, in Parliament. The data, compiled from Indian Missions and Posts overseas, highlights the scale of India’s global student diaspora. However, state-wise and course-specific details were not available.
Singh noted that Indian students choose to study abroad for diverse reasons, often influenced by personal preferences. These choices also shape their career paths post-graduation, reflecting a mix of aspirations and opportunities available overseas.
