Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon on Monday accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of mishandling the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. He alleged that the ruling party’s ministers and MLAs approved the legislation without properly examining its provisions, calling it a serious lapse on the government’s part.
In a statement, Dhillon said the passage of such important legislation without adequate scrutiny reflected the ruling party’s negligence. He further alleged that the Bhagwant Singh Mann government was politicizing the issue of sacrilege and hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.
The BJP leader also criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for not appearing before the Akal Takht despite directions issued to legislators. He alleged that the Chief Minister’s absence amounted to disrespect towards the highest Sikh temporal authority.
Dhillon said the state government should have consulted the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and the Akal Takht before introducing legislation related to Sikh religious affairs. He also questioned why AAP legislators allegedly sought permission from party convenor Arvind Kejriwal before appearing before the Akal Takht.
Raising further questions over the issue, Dhillon alleged that legal shortcomings in the legislation forced the Akal Takht to intervene. Referring to reports that the government had given a written assurance to amend the law within a month, he said the Chief Minister should also appear before the Akal Takht and accept responsibility. Concluding his remarks, Dhillon maintained that no political leader is above the authority of the Akal Takht and alleged that the people of Punjab would not forgive the AAP government for hurting Sikh sentiments.
